Neuromuscular Dentistry: Getting the Right Bite

Have you ever wondered why you have headaches so frequently? Do you catch yourself reaching for Advil each day as if it were like taking vitamins? Are you waking up with sore jaw muscles? Do you see your teeth getting shorter over the years? Before your nose touches your chin, don’t you think it’s time to do something about it? Your answers may lie in the benefits of Neuromuscular Dentistry. You may be wondering: what is Neuromuscular Dentistry? And is it for you?

Neuromuscular Dentistry addresses the muscles that control jaw position, swallowing, and chewing. These muscles can become unbalanced, resulting in uneven tooth wear, headaches, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ/TMD), and a host of other disorders. When your bite is corrected through Neuromuscular Dentistry, a smile can be created which will look its best. Traditional dentistry is based upon the mechanical concept thatif your present bite doesn’t hurt, it is best for you. It is important to note that although your bite may not hurt, it does not mean that it is healthy. The absence of pain is not always a good indicator of health. For example, you may not know that you have certain medical disorders, such as high blood pressure or cancer, if there are no outward symptoms involved.

Just as you can accommodate certain medical conditions, you can accommodate a bad bite. A bad bite (malocclusion) may not appear crooked or painful; therefore it may go unnoticed for several years. In order to properly complete my diagnosis of these conditions, I used computers along with highly sophisticated electro-diagnostic technology. The public has come to accept as a common norm the medical profession using electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, and a host of other electro-diagnostic evaluation methods.

You certainly would not expect a physician to completely diagnose your heart condition merely by feeling your pulse, would you? Likewise, “bite disease” and TMJ disorder can more accurately be measured and treated utilizing computerized electronics. Dentistry, too, has come a long way.

My goal is to provide you with care, comprehensive dentistry. Neuromuscular Dentistry places a great emphasis on gum tissue health, jaw posture, muscle balance, occlusion, aesthetics of your teeth and how the aesthetics balance with the shape of your face. The health of your mouth is of utmost importance in acquiring and maintaining the health of the entire body. Imagine how improved the quality of your life would be without reaching for pain relievers every day. We invite you to come in for a comprehensive exam, and allow us the privilege of improving the quality of your life.
